about

I'm following the water downhill.
The dotted yellow lines on the highway are racing underneath so fast they're just one long streaking blur.
Everything close is smeared and faded by the speed. Everything in the distance is solid and unwavering.
I'm looking through the air, shimmering with the heat of the asphalt, at white rays of sunlight falling down between bright misty clouds.
The mountains wear them like a cloak.

It's winter and there's snow covering everything. The cold and the silence seep into deep blue shadows that the trees hold onto like blankets in their sleep.
Every patch of dusk-tinted snow seems as deep as the ocean, and there's a river not far away running over cold dark river stones.
We go there to watch falling flakes melt and become water and drift away downstream.
Increasing the gain on the microphone I can hear deeper into the water towards the bottom of the river - all the jumbled rocks softly knocking into each other under the ice,
and then we go back home and fall asleep under a long, cold twilight.

I'm following the water downhill.
I'm moving even faster now, but the night sky is so open and vast that it hardly seems like I'm going anywhere at all.
Slowly, pillars of light rise up on the horizon.
Monoliths of neon. The cracked and frantic lines painted on the highway point right towards them.
From here they flicker just like the quiet stars.

It's morning now and I'm slowly woken up by the warming air.
It seems to catch the wind and hold it.
For a while I just watch the filtered sunlight drift through the pines.
All at once I'm here, or in the sand listening to the waves fold over themselves,
or tracing out across the green and white ranges until they're swallowed by the atmosphere far, far on the horizon.
It's all always there at once, unfolding.
