Andarctica is the master of beautiful source material.
Hand-collected, warm, and filled with light. The original
drone they sent me was delicate, like a wisp of steam
on a pane of glass. It was so open I had to respond
to it. Then came Brian’s incredible tape-reel sample
session. Hints of it run through each piece as granular
fabrics: “shutters”, “screens”, and “brushes” hint at their
shape and texture.
In my other projects there is always a heavy continuity.
Creative satisfaction comes from the meticulous
craft and detailing of every transition into a larger
idea. Statement, expansion, counterpoint, transition.
In this project the beginning and end of each track
are completely open – a return to the core drone. You
design under a procedural mindset never hearing the
companion tracks until the final product. The end result
is beautifully alive – new ideas and sequences realized
and collapsed and then realized again.
